Hi I’m Claire Shorrock and I work in a studio in Stokes Croft, Bristol.
My company, Claire Shorrock Illustration, was founded in the summer of 2011 after graduating from my BA (Hons) degree in Illustration at UWE in Bristol. I draw with pencils, paint with gouache and use colouring pencils for detail to create my artwork.
After my degree, which I totally recommend, I knew that I wanted to predominantly be a children’s book illustrator. My dream came true when I was shortlisted for the Macmillan Prize with my book Magnus, which is going to be published this August by Lion children’s. It’s a story about a giant dog that doesn’t fit in anywhere and I wrote the original story at uni, although it’s taken a while to get to this stage, I have learnt so much about the process that I feel really happy with the outcome. I am now also working on more self-authored titles.
I wanted to also create designs for greetings cards and stationery and completed placements at both Hallmark and Tigerprint before going on to work with James Ellis on his ‘Shakies’ range.
It’s difficult to explain what my art encapsulates but I suppose I always try to have an element of story-telling within an image, with inviting characters, playfulness and a sense of humor. I get my inspiration from art that is much more abstract than my own and from music. Being in the countryside and my dog Ponyo also contribute to my designs.
Living and working in Bristol definitely influences my work, from being part of the Drawn in Bristol collective, (a very inspiring bunch of people!) to walking around the city, which has such diversity. From St Werburghs’ city farm, to Clifton and Stokes Croft (where my studio is), there’s so much to look at and be inspired by. The city is just really creative which of course, feeds into my work.
I have an Etsy shop where I sell prints and soon I will be selling my own cards too, potentially even wrapping paper! If you want to have a browse, just click here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/ShorrockIllustration?ref=l2-shop-info-name
I also have work in a lovely shop called Blaze on Park Row, which everyone should visit, there’s some really nice work.
Other than that, Magnus will be publishing in August 2015 and you can pre-order it on Amazon at the moment.
