The curriculum: QEH Junior School provides a broad, engaging education that inspires curiosity and a love for learning. Small class sizes allow teachers to know each boy well and provide focused support, while lessons encourage pupils to ask questions, take on challenges, and learn through first hand experiences. Alongside the core curriculum, pupils have opportunities to develop their interests in music, drama, art, design technology, sport, and outdoor education. The single sex setting allows boys to grow in confidence and develop their strengths.
Co-curricular activities: Sport and activity are an important part of life at QEH Junior School. All boys can play in a team and represent the school, with regular sports afternoons at our Failand Sports Ground. Boys take part in rugby, football, hockey, cricket, tennis, athletics, swimming, and golf, alongside activities such as forest school and cookery club. Music and drama are also central to school life, with choirs, individual music lessons, weekly drama, and regular performances in the QEH Theatre. The QE Award, our own outdoor challenge programme for Years 5 and 6, gives boys the opportunity to develop teamwork and practical outdoor skills. Each year group also enjoys a residential trip, with exciting activities in Dartmoor and the Brecon Beacons.
Pastoral care: At QEH Junior School, every boy is known as an individual. As a small school, our staff know the pupils well and can provide the guidance and support they need as they grow. We place strong emphasis on developing personal qualities such as good manners, reliability, kindness, and consideration for others, alongside the wider life skills that help boys flourish. Our proactive approach to pastoral care ensures that pupils’ wellbeing is closely supported throughout their time at the school. This commitment was recognised in our recent ISI inspection, when QEH was awarded a ‘Significant Strength’ for our provision for pupils’ physical, mental, and emotional health.
