Born in Bristol, built to change mobility

How one family’s personal experience inspired a radically different mobility scooter – designed for the uneven reality of everyday life.

After watching his sister, who lives with Multiple Sclerosis, navigate mobility scooters that could feel unstable, stigmatising and diminishing, Supersmith co-founder Tom Morgan wanted to create something safer and more confidence-inspiring. That deeply human challenge became an engineering project in 2018 and found its natural home at Bristol Robotics Laboratory (on the UWE campus), where the 3Scooter was born and developed. A fitting place for a new brand blending cutting edge technology with thoughtful design.

From an engineering perspective, Supersmith took the problem of tipping and solved it with the development of their EverLevel™ Stability Technology – a system unique to the 3Scooter and now patented in several countries.

Supersmith co-founder and CTO Dr Fred Russell-Pavier holds a PhD in Robotics from Bristol University. He lives in Clifton and knows its slopes, cambers and uneven pavements first-hand. With input and guidance from a community of mobility aid users, these first-hand experiences fed into the design process, resulting in a scooter shaped by real lives and real streets.

The system works to sense the scooter’s movement and automatically adjusts the rear wheels when the terrain changes unexpectedly. It does not make the 3Scooter untippable, but it significantly reduces the risk when riders encounter difficult terrain.

It’s a whole different experience. The stabilisation is amazing. It’s like magic.

A different view of everyday life…

With enhanced stability comes the ability to raise the seat significantly higher on a 3Scooter. For many people, the most immediate difference is being able to look ahead, reach a café table more naturally and speak to friends at eye level.

The 3Scooter has a tight turning circle, a lightweight structure and the agility to manoeuvre through busy pavements, cafés and indoor spaces. The result is a mobility scooter that looks and feels deliberately different. The 3Scooter is designed for people who can walk short distances but need additional support to make longer journeys possible. It is available to buy at £2995 (with VAT exemption).

You can book a 60–90min 3Scooter experience in Bristol at www.supersmith.co
