Award-winning Tumbledown Gin brings its remarkable story and distinctive flavour to a special tasting at DBM Wines.
Tumbledown Gin – a unique spirit distilled in the Falkland Islands – will be attracting connoisseurs to DBM Wines in Clifton on 27 November for a tasting session.
Named after the mountain that overlooks the islands’ capital, Port Stanley, Tumbledown Gin is a handcrafted spirit created from fresh local water and native botanicals. It also has a backstory that reflects the uniqueness of the Falkland Islands. It began with Taff Davies, a former soldier in the British Army, who began distilling on a small scale only for the local community. The spirit’s high quality and unique flavour quickly attracted a strong following among the Falkland Islands population of around 3,000 people. Yorkshire born entrepreneur John Hellowell, a successful Isle of Man businessman who was then living and working in the Falklands, saw the potential in other markets and how to overcome the logistical challenges posed by its remote location.
John Hellowell is a director of Falkland Islands Spirits, the business behind the Tumbledown Gin brand. He says: ‘What began as a whisper spread by word of mouth to locals soon grew into a spirit that now has a loyal and growing international following. Tumbledown Gin remains true to its origins as an artisan product distilled in the Falklands, but thanks to the Royal Naval Fleet Auxiliary transporting it 8,000 miles to be bottled in the UK, it is now available to gin lovers around the world.’
This year The Gin Guide (which is the industry’s global membership organisation and a ‘go to’ hub for expert reviews and latest news) gave Tumbledown a silver award in the Traditional Gin (over 42 per cent ABV) category alongside spirits from the UK, Europe, USA and New Zealand.
